Coldplay Fan Wins Refund Over Concert Seating Dispute

A concert-goer secured a full refund from Ticketmaster after a disappointing experience at a Coldplay concert in Dublin. The fan, who had eagerly anticipated the event, found himself and his spouse in “restricted view” seats during the highly anticipated Music of the Spheres world tour performance.

James McGetrick, who was thrilled to have secured pre-sale tickets, described the occasion as a “disaster” when they had to crouch to catch any glimpse of the band. The couple spent €332 on tickets, expecting a premium experience, only to be directed to seats in the lower Hogan Stand with an obstructed view.

Legal Proceedings

Taking legal action through the small claims court, Mr. McGetrick pursued the Ticketline Unlimited Company, operating as Ticketmaster. He explained to Judge Peter White that the issue began with the elevated stage, which was designed for standing attendees on the pitch, leaving seated viewers struggling to see. The situation worsened as people in front stood up, compelling others to follow suit, while the overhang from the upper stand further blocked their view.

As the concert continued, frustration grew among those seated, leading to congestion in the aisles. Mr. McGetrick and others approached a steward, but their concerns were met with little attention. The situation escalated, turning unpleasant as other attendees directed their ire towards McGetrick after being told to return to their seats.

Seeking Resolution

Following the concert, Mr. McGetrick contacted Ticketmaster, who redirected him to the event promoter, MCD. Initially, his claim was filed against MCD, but the court advised him to target Ticketmaster instead. Persisting with his case, Mr. McGetrick rejected an offer of €190, seeking a full refund as there was no prior indication of restricted views when purchasing through the artist pre-sale.

Judge White’s decision to favour Mr. McGetrick came after Ticketmaster chose not to contest the case in court. The judge considered the evidence and the uncontested account of the purchase experience, concluding that Mr. McGetrick was entitled to a full refund.
