Investigation Reveals Unnecessary Children’s Surgeries in Ireland

In a detailed review initiated in July 2024, the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh and Children's Health Ireland conducted a thorough examination of 147 hip dysplasia surgeries performed from 2021 to 2023. This audit was prompted by concerns from a whistle-blower regarding the surgical criteria used for children with Developmental Hip Dysplasia at these institutions.

Audit Findings

The audit uncovered that a significant number of surgeries did not meet the necessary clinical criteria. Specifically, out of 85 surgeries performed at Temple Street Hospital, 51 were deemed unnecessary, accounting for approximately 60% of the cases. Similarly, at Cappagh Hospital, 55 out of 70 surgeries did not adhere to the guidelines, marking a staggering 79% as unwarranted. At Crumlin Hospital, one of the 63 surgeries reviewed was found to be unjustified.

Ongoing Review and Recommendations

The findings of the audit have led to recommendations for long-term follow-up care for all children who underwent pelvic osteotomy surgery. The Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed plans to review approximately 1,800 children and young people who have undergone such surgeries since 2010.
