Storm Éowyn Triggers Record Compensation Applications

Storm Éowyn wreaked havoc across Ireland and the UK, leaving over a million people without power and causing significant travel disruptions. In the aftermath, more than 92,000 individuals have sought help through the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme to cope with the extensive damage.

Reports indicate that this is the highest number of applications received for any weather-related event in the history of the state. The Department of Social Protection has already distributed over 45,600 initial payments, totaling nearly €11.2 million, to those affected.

Impact and Recovery

Despite the financial aid provided, many in Ireland are still grappling with the aftermath of the storm, which struck between January 23 and 25. Known for its fierce winds and heavy rains, Storm Éowyn caused widespread devastation, impacting infrastructure severely.

At its height, the storm left 768,000 homes, schools, farms, and businesses without electricity, with some areas experiencing outages for almost three weeks. In response, the government initiated the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme to address the needs of those affected.

The Humanitarian Assistance Scheme

The scheme is structured in three stages:

• Stage 1: Provides immediate emergency relief for essential needs like food and clothing.
• Stage 2: Offers support for replacing essential household items such as white goods and basic furniture.
• Stage 3: Aims to restore homes to a livable condition, covering repairs such as plastering, flooring, electrical rewiring, and painting.

Stage 1 was operational from January 23 to April 25, while Stages 2 and 3, which commenced in January, remain open and are subject to means testing.

The Department of Social Protection has confirmed that “over 92,000 applications for the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme have been registered to date, with just over 45,600 Stage 1 payments made, totalling almost €11.2 million in respect of Storm Éowyn-related claims.” The number of applications and the total financial support are expected to increase as recovery efforts continue.
